Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu at Broad Street Kickboxing in Philadelphia

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is one of the world’s most popular grappling arts. BJJ involves manipulating an opponent’s body using throws, leverage and body control into various pins and submission holds. Submission holds include joint locks and strangles. There are no strikes allowed in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

Black Belt Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Instruction

Our instructors come from a strong lineage in both the Philadelphia area as well as southern Florida. Our coaches are both Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belts and have been instructing in Philadelphia for over a decade.

Jake Skelly, our head instructor, has been training in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu since 2006. He has competed in professional-level Jiu-Jitsu matches as well as Mixed Martial Arts and Muay Thai. He is an accomplished MMA and striking coach, having trained various amateur fighters to win 11 amateur championships in Mixed Martial Arts, Muay Thai and Glory rules kickboxing. He was promoted to black belt in November of 2021 by Ray Huxen of Osagame.

Our second instructor John Fulton is a first-degree black belt and has trained amongst professional fighters since he was a white belt, having trained at the world-famous American Top Team in southern Florida. John has competed in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu competitions and is an established Jiu-Jitsu instructor in Philadelphia, having previously taught at Maxercise.

Competition-Based Jiu-Jitsu Instruction

We believe that Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is best learned in a fast-paced, active environment. As a result, our classes are engaging and challenging, testing a student’s mental and physical capabilities at the same time.

Instructors will go over the points and rules systems for Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu competition. They will also discuss various self-defense and MMA-based theories to give students a full understanding of the strengths and weaknesses of various grappling positions.

Traditional Gi & Modern No-Gi Techniques

Our instructors are trained in traditional techniques that involved the Kimono (known as a Gi) as well as more modern techniques that are practiced without the uniform. With competition experience under both rulesets, our Black Belt Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu instructors are uniquely qualified to guide your learning experience.

Serious Physical Fitness Results

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu classes are challenging workouts designed to increase overall physical fitness. Movements in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu typically involve moving your body and/or your opponent’s body across the mat. This results in a full-body exercise that is challenging for even the most physically fit athletes.

That does NOT mean that you must be in peak condition to begin training. All of our classes are beginner-friendly and welcome to people of any fitness level. However, after several months of consistent training, you will definitely see an increase in your physical fitness levels.
